Is

rape victim's BBC blog generates unwelcome worldwide attention
But they are not all positive. Some - a
significant minority - speak of Mukhtar Mai's disservice to
the image of Pakistan, and the unbalanced view she gives of
rural life.
"All of us sympathise with what happened to you.
Everyone feels bad about that. Please now try to forget and stay at
home, and don't make us a laughing-stock in the world," says one writer.
Another is equally
outspoken:
"What a shame! Are women
in Europe and elsewhere not raped every day? The way certain
Western
organisations have given prominence to Mai in their reports - to me, it's

Pakistan's rape reform woes
Pakistan's
government has put a controversial women's
rights bill on hold, throwing into turmoil efforts to reform hardline
Islamic laws on rape.
In Pakistan, rape
is dealt with under Islamic laws known as the Hudood Ordinances. These
criminalise all sex outside marriage.
So, under Hudood,
if a rape victim fails to present four male witnesses to the crime, she
herself could face punishment.
This has made it
almost impossible to prosecute rape cases.

Pakistan votes to amend rape laws
Pakistan's
national assembly has voted to amend the country's strict Sharia laws
on rape and adultery.
.....Pakistan's religious parties
called the new legislation "a harbinger of lewdness and indecency in
the country", and against
the strictures of the Koran and Sharia law.
They have threatened nationwide
protests over the revised bill.
Addressing parliament on Wednesday,
the leader of the six-party MMA Islamic alliance, Maulana Fazlur
Rahman, said the bill would "turn Pakistan into a free-sex zone".
"Existing laws
are correct and should be maintained... The changes are not in line
with Islamic teaching."

the case of 18-year old Christian Abok Alfa Akok in the West-Sudanese
town Darfur who was charged with adultery and sentenced to death by
stoning on 8 December 2001. In March 2002 the verdict was transformed
into 75 lashings to be carried out immediately. Interesting here is the
fact that by convicting a
Christian this case stands in direct contrast to statements by Islamists that
shari'ah is not applicable to non-Muslims. This is a tendency
which can also be observed concerning issues such as alcohol
prohibition, dress codes and gender separation on public transport.

Kadra attacked in public
Norwegian-Somalian Kadra, who became
famous in Norway for exposing imam support of female circumcision, was
beaten unconscious on Thursday.
Kadra was attacked and beaten
senseless by seven or eight persons of Somali origin, newspaper VG
reports.
"I was terrified. While I lay on the
pavement they kicked me and screamed that I had trampled on the Koran.
Several shouted Allah-o-akbar (God is great) and also recited from the
Koran," Kadra told VG.
Kadra linked the attack to recent
remarks in VG where she said that the Koran's views on women needed to
be reinterpreted.

their money would end up subsidising the lashing of women in public.

official caught without a headscarf on a scooter was let off last month
and a prostitute who was paraded through the town won the sympathy of passers-by
because of the hypocrisy of
her persecutors: the woman’s client was allowed quietly to disappear.

New apostasy bill to impose
death on anyone who leaves Islam

Pakistan’s government sends draft bill
tabled by six-party Islamic alliance to standing committee for review.
Under the bill’s terms, apostates would be sentenced to death or life
in prison. Testimony by two adults is the only independent evidence
needed to determine or demonstrate apostasy. Lahore archbishop is
praying the bill is never adopted.
Islamabad (AsiaNews) – A draft bill
adopted in first reading by Pakistan’s National Assembly is now before
a standing committee. Tabled by a six-party politico-religious
alliance, the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal or MMA, the Apostasy Act 2006
which the government sent to the committee would impose the death
penalty on Muslim men and life in prison on Muslim women in case they
leave Islam. It would also force them to forfeit their property and
lose legal custody of children.

Spencer: Death to the Apostates
An Afghan citizen named Abdul
Rahman, you may recall, made international news last spring, when his
conversion from Islam to Christianity led to his arrest, with the
intention of putting him on trial for apostasy. At that time he was
spirited away to safety in Italy. Now jihadists in Afghanistan are
demanding his return to Afghanistan in exchange for a kidnapped Italian
journalist, Gabriele Torsello. “We want this issue resolved
before the end of Ramadan,” his captors demanded, but no resolution
seemed imminent as the holy month drew to a close.
It is safe to say that if Italian
authorities agreed to turn over Abdul Rahman to the kidnappers, the
convert would almost certainly be killed for his crime of apostasy from
Islam. Yet at the time of Abdul Rahman’s arrest, puzzled Western analysts pointed to what
they thought were guarantees of freedom of religion and of conscience
in the new Afghan Constitution: after all, didn’t the document
pledge “respect” for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? Didn’t
it say, “followers of other religions” were “free to exercise their
faith and perform their religious rites within the limits of the
provisions of law”?
Indeed it did, but
what were
the “limits of the provisions of law”? The Constitution itself
made the answer abundantly clear: “In
Afghanistan,” it stipulated, “no law can be contrary to the beliefs and
provisions of the sacred religion of Islam.”
.....Most non-Muslim observers missed
the significance of these provisions, and especially the danger they
posed to converts like Abdul Rahman and to the freedom of conscience in
general. This is understandable, however, since so many Muslims
in the West maintained that Islam contained no provision against
apostasy. Typical of this was “Leaving Islam is not a capital
crime,” a Chicago Tribune article published by M. Cherif Bassiouni, a
professor of Law at DePaul University and President of the
International Human Rights Law Institute, when Abdul Rahman was
arrested. “A Muslim’s conversion to Christianity,” Bassiouni wrote, “is
not a crime punishable by death under Islamic law, contrary to the
claims in the case of Abdul Rahman in Afghanistan.” Several Muslim spokesmen have
insisted the same thing to me in radio debates, excoriating me as “Islamophobic” for pointing out that
many Islamic texts do indeed call for

- Police to brief Muslims before terror raids
POLICE have agreed to consult a panel
of Muslim leaders before mounting
counter-terrorist raids or arrests. Members of the panel will offer
their assessment of whether information police have on a suspect is too
flimsy and will also consider the consequences on community relations
of a raid.
Members will be security vetted and
will have to promise not to
reveal any intelligence they are shown. They will not have to sign the
Official Secrets Act.
The
first panel, expected to consist of four people, will be set up
initially in London. Tomorrow representatives from police forces across
England and Wales will decide whether to make the scheme national.
Muslim groups have welcomed the
move, which is understood to be backed by Sir Ian Blair, the
Metropolitan police commissioner.
This week the Association of Chief
Police Officers will discuss
with MI5 and the Home Office whether to reveal to the panel
intelligence information from the security service.

Krekar claims Islam will win
Norway's most controversial refugee,
Mullah Krekar, told an Oslo newspaper on Monday that there's a war
going on between "the West" and Islam. He said he's sure that Islam
will win, and he also had praise for suspected terrorist leader Osama
bin Laden.
"We're the ones who will change you,"
Krekar told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet in his first interview since
an uproar broke out over cartoons deemed offensive to Muslims.
"Just look at
the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding
like mosquitoes," Krekar said. "Every western woman in the EU is
producing an average of 1.4 children. Every Muslim woman in the same
countries are producing 3.5 children.
"By 2050, 30 percent of the
population in Europe will be Muslim."
He claimed that "our way of
thinking... will prove more powerful than yours." He loosely defined
"western thinking" as formed by the values held by leaders of western
or non-islamic nations. Its "materialism, egoism and wildness" has
altered Christianity, he claimed.
Krekar, who's been supported by the
Norwegian government since arriving as a refugee from northern Iraq in
the early 1990s, now faces deportation after violating the terms of his
refugee status and being deemed a threat to national security.
Bin Laden 'a good man'
Krekar told
Dagbladet that he favours Islamic rule where political and religious
leaders are one and the same. One such leader he respects, he
said, is Osama bin Laden.
"Osama bin Laden is a good person,"
Krekar said. He claimed Osama bin Laden is considered a terrorist
simply because he lacks his own state.
"Those who say Osama bin Laden is a
terrorist are themselves killing our women and children," Krekar said.
Attempts to
"spread democracy," he claimed, are merely a ruse to wage war against
Islam, adding that "the West destroyed the Taliban regime in
Afghanistan" because "it feared the Islamic state."
