Dyer demolishes the Lindsay Atkinson field
Alastair conceded only one draw (to Neville), on the way to convincing win, 3 points clear of the field of 18 other entrants in the inaugural Lindsay Atkinson event.
The final results and standings for the Lindsay Atkinson can be viewed here...
Next week... 3rd December.
Coming up this Wednesday is the first of the two sessions of the annual Allegro event.
The event is to be run as a 9 round Swiss with a time limit is 15 minutes per player and in this 1st session 5 rounds will be completed.
The second session of the Allegro is to be deferred until Wednesday 17th December as a couple of players cannot attend on Wednesday 10th.
Instead on that middle Wednesday (10th), the club Lightning championship will take place.
Again this will be a Swiss but with only 5 minutes per player. |

Next week... 26th Nov.
Next week we will be playing 3 rounds of the Lindsay Atkinson, and it would be good to start early at 6:50pm if everyone can get there.
There are a number of forfeits so only a few players have three rounds. This will be the last night of the Lindsay Atkinson.
3rd December will be the start of the Allegro, 15 minute flat. New players are welcome and asked to register by 6:50pm.
This will run for two nights with a 9 round Swiss.
17 December is the final night of the year with the BCC Lightning Championships – 11 rounds 5 minutes.
Players are asked to consider how to deal with
a) long drawn out tournaments and
b) avoiding results being decided by forfeits
for 2009.
12th November 2008
Oldies verus Young Ones.
This inaugural one night tournament proved to be a highly popular and fun event.
There were 3 rounds with time limits of 30mins, 15mins and 5 mins per player.
The seniors team was bolstered by the return of Thomas Hendrey
for the evening and this undoubtedly helped to tip the balance in favour of the Oldies who triumphed in each of the 3 rounds to run out convincing winners on the night.
Maybe next year the age limit for the youth team could be set at 30?
8th November 2008
Last week Alastair found a beautiful move to snatch a win with barely a minute left on the clock against Phil. Phil Donnelly Alastair Dyer 0-1
Jul;ian Stewart had an excellent Burnie Shines tournament after a long lay-off from Chess.
In his last round game he smashed into Ian Rout's kingside Julian Steward Ian Rout 1-0
27 October 2008
Tony Dowden wins the Burnie Shines.
Alastair Dyer got the best local result finishing tied for third place after succeeding in drawing with each of the top three seeds.

Dragan, playing fast and accurate chess, set too many problems for Phil who eventually caved in to drop back into second place.
Meanwhile Alastair, playing like he was double parked, had polished off both Andrew and Gemma and was on his way back to Sheffield before most people had even started their second game.
20 October 2008
Last week Alastair and Phil continued their winning ways to maintain their position at the top of the ladder 1 point clear of Dragan Radosavljevic (i.e. taking byes in to account).
David Hughes, who had been sitting on a paltry 1.5/6 had a great night with unexpected back to back demolitions of the in form Kuzmics, Carey and Dylan.
Neville's woes continued as he resigned after leaving a piece en prise in each of his games against Dragan and Phil.
Charlie and Russell played out a difficult tactical encounter with both Kings exposed to mortal danger. In the end Charlies attack came up short.

This week again there were a few absentees which had an impact on the draw as all of Fred, Reg, Victor and Ashton forfeited their games.
In the games of interest in Round 5 David was good enough to hold Russell to a draw and Carey lost to Kevin.
In Round 6 Kevin held the in-form Dylan to a draw with other games going by rating.
Vincent and Russell were able to reconstruct this highly entertaining encounter Vincent Horton Russell Horton 0-1
Last weekend (Oct 4,5) The Tasmanian Junior Championships were held at Latrobe with a strong field of players coming from around the State.
Alastait Dyer once again demonstrated that no Junior in the State can match him at the moment as he retained his Under 18 title without difficulty.
Andrew Fifield also had a good run finishing 3rd in theU18 and he has provided me with this remarkable game where he somehow managed to survive an overwhelming attack by Charlie to go on to win. Andrew Fifield Charlie Smith 1-0

4 October 2008
Last week rounds 3 and 4 were marred by the absence of 3 competitors, Charlie, Nina and David which resulted in a total of 6 games being won on forfeit.
There was
only 1 minor upset in round 3 when, after a long and even struggle, Russell dropped a piece and lost to Kevin.
Round 4 saw 3 closely matched ties that each finished in a draw; Neville v Andrew, Russell v Reg and Dylan v Vincent.
Alastair and Phil now share the lead on 4/4 follwed by Carey and Dragan on 3/4.
27 September 2008
The inaugural Lindsay Atkinson memorial tournament kicked off last very successfully last Wednesday evening with a tremendous field of 19 players.
Before the games started President Carey welcomed newcomer Vic Jamieson (ex Queensland recently, and Scotland before that).
The 1/2 hour format, with no requirement to record moves, is an excellent innovation which creates an exciting chess environment that is quite different to either the longer 1 hour plus format or the shorter Allegro/Blitz formats.
With 2 rounds played on the night there were quite a few nerve jangling guillotine finishes and some interesting results.
In closely matched ties between old foes in round 1 Andrew, Reg and Russell scored victories over Charlie, Dragan and Vincent respectively.
Neville finshed the evening a little worse for wear after being defeated by David before going on to concede a draw to Ashton, both of whom were very pleased with the efforts.
After 2 rounds Phil, Russell, Alastair and Carey lead with 2 points
.

The Robert Isted completed
The tournament director has absconded so I don't have final standings and results from the last round games played on the 10th September however last week the medals were given out. Alastair, as reported earlier, won the event. Dylan defeated his Dad Carey to finish in second place and notch up his best tournament result to date. Dragan finished in 3rd place.
Neville has secured a nice little cup, (second hand), to used as a perpetual trophy for the Youth vs Wisdom, (sounds better than old!), team match which is intended to become a regular annual feature at the Club. The inaugural match was planned for last Wednesday (17th) however it was decided to defer it until later in the year as there were only 3 juniors present on the night. It was generally felt that 5/6 boards at least would be more representative of the the two groups.
Games: Alastair Dyer Vincent Horton 1-0 Russell Horton David Hughes 1-0
Please note!!! The Lindsay Atkinson kicks off this coming Wednesday and the Club committee has opted for a change in the format previously advertised.
There will now only be a single round robin (rather than 3 divisions) and to get through the lengthy playing schedule the time limit is 30 minutes per player with no increment. Players should expect to play two games per night and possibly even three on occasion if time permits.
The calendar of events for the remainder of the year is here...

Alastair wins the Robert Isted
11 September 2008
One and a half points clear of the field Alastair Dyer goes into next week's final round game against Kevin comfortable in the knowledge that it is something of a formality as he has now won the event.
As the key match between Dylan and Reg ended in a draw last week, Dylan hangs on to second place. He will be hoping for a win against his Dad this week to clinch the silver medal however Carey himself, also having a fine tournament, is in the running for the bronze so this should be a great game.
3 September 2008
Both of the Club's junior girls pulled off a win this week. Gemma Woodwell defeated Fred Duiker while Nina Horton, who turns 15 this weekend, celebrated her birthday early when she defeated Neville Ledger.
Russell had this to say about it, "Nina showed me her game the following morning at breakfast and was very excited about her win against Neville. It was interesting, while there is a significant difference in rating/playing ability it showed that one slip can lead to a dreadful position in which your opponent dominates. This fits with my thinking and play against many of the up and coming juniors – most of the time you can win but don’t dare go wrong!"
Meanwhile Russell himself played an excellent game against Phil who was lucky to escape with a draw Russell Horton Phil Donnelly 1/2
Carey fought well before going down to Alastair who now holds a 1 point lead over Dylan who slipped quietly into second place with the help of a forfeit against Reg.
Congratulations to Jade Bryant who registered his first Club chess victory in defeating newcomer Guisseppe Filini.
23nd August2008
Well if the Robert Isted was a weekender it would be all over already bar the shouting, with prizes going to Alastair, Reg and Dylan for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but it's not! There are still 3 more rounds to go.
Last Wednesday Dylan Kuzmic continued his strong run of form with a win against David Hughes having disposed of Dragan Radosavljevic the week previously in a major upset. Dylan had this to say about the latter game.
"I was really happy beating Dragan. It was the first time I've ever beaten him in a rated match, after losing many winable games with him over the years. It was a pretty even game where he was doing the attacking and all I could do was defend. I offered him a draw 3 times but he declined.
He ended up blundering a pawn to start with and then it went slowly downhill for him from there.
In the end he resigned when I was 1 move off mating him with a pawn, a knight and my king. There was nothing he could do. If I can keep this form up I should be in contention for a medal. But chess can be a funny game....".
On board 1 Nigel put up solid resistance against Alastair however after the youngster queued his rooks on an open
h file to the white king and brought his other pieces into the attack the inevitable breakthrough came.
Reg Harvey must be very pleased to be finding some good form as he pushed Vincent Horton aside to move into 2nd place.
Phil continued with the "percentage chess" that has brought him good results this year playing the exchange Ruy Lopez against Neville and finding enough play against black's queenside pawn weakness to win. Phil Donnelly Neville Ledger 1-0
And Carey did well to draw with Dragan, (I thought that he even had winning chances).
Next week the game to watch will be Reg v Dylan (2nd and 3rd). Normally I would tip Reg due to his greater experience but Dylan did defeat him earlier this year so it's too hard to pick! Should be a great game either way.
16th August2008
Phil played the French for the first time in this millenium purely to avoid Alastair's attacking Sicilian and was rewarded with a superior position for most of the game before throwing it all away with some silly blunders in time trouble.
Alastair Dyer Phil Donnelly 1-0
Reg threw everything at Nigel (including his last three Kingside pawns) but Nigel held his nerve and survived to draw the game.
Dragan looked to be in great shape against Dylan as he manouvered his pieces in a closed position but somehow or other the game finished in a shock upset win instead for Dylan.
At the end of a long evening we were just about to lock up when we discovered Russell and Andrew engrossed in their game in the other room.
Russell was very disspointed to concede a draw in this game as he thought he was winning in it.
Russell has asked me to mention that the ruling about ½ point byes was only up to round 2. So there is an alteration to the placings from last week.
9th August2008
I'd like to begin with a couple of comments by Neville on this week's games:
"Firstly I thought that Fred made a very good showing against Russell and he is a most welcome and strong addition to our club. I lost to Dragan, we all have excuses. I was overcome by his inspired opening moves which will not be found in any chess book in existence and by my tremendous interest in Harvey - Dyer which was enthralling."
Yes indeed Reg v Alastair was a ripper. After only the first two moves,
1d4 Nf6 2.Nd2!? e5!? the gloves were off as the game moved into uncharted waters. Reg took the pawn and hung on to it for quite some time in a tactical melee.Reg castled long and threw his f,g,h pawns into the assault, gradually exposing the black king, but in the ensuing queen and rook ending Alastair had enough counterplay to hold the balance leading to an agreed draw on his offer.
Phil was able to get a strong positional advantage against Andrew with play against a backward d pawn eventually winning easily.
Other games appeared to be relatively straightforward wins for the highrer rated player.
4 August 2008
This week Dragan kept Alastair up until late but to no avail as it only delayed the inevitable.
Meanwhile
Reg, (not looking so rusty anymore!), defeated Charlie to join Alastair at the head of the field on 3 points and in doing so he set up an encounter with the latter on the top board next week.
The family tie between Vincent and Russell went into an opposite castled Sicilian with both kings facing formidable attacks but after Vincent (white) secured a knight on f5 the writing was on the wall for Dad.
David seemed to be far better against Nigel early on however there is hardly anything more likely to make your hair turn gray than getting into a queen and rook ending with precious little time left on your clock against Nigel and he went down in a hail of checks.
Dylan lost a piece in his game with newcomer Gemma Woodwell and she was good enough to be able to hold a draw from there against her more experienced opponent.
Having left a knight en prise last week Phil was pleased when Kevin did precisely the same thing in their game and although Kevin won a pawn later the endgame was hopelessly lost for him.
And...Ashton won his first tournament chess game; Cogratulations!
Neville has given me permission to reproduce this delightful anecdote from last week's playing session: -
"It is 8/30 p.m. at the Burnie Chess Club. You could hear a pin drop. The concentration in the air is palpable. I walk past the game between Jade and Ashton. They hold up their score sheets and whisper to me. I cannot hear. They whisper louder "How do we write this down?" Ashton silently demonstrates that he has just promoted his pawn to a queen. I take their score sheets and drawing on untold years of experience I neatly record the move and return the score sheets to them. Ashton says "it doesn't look right, it's check" I silently amend what I had recorded and what I had overlooked. Trivial yes. Unique in my experience also yes."
Next week we will welcome our newest member Fred Duiker to the club and hope he enjoys his first game there against Jade Bryant. Fred has some experience as a club chess player but he tells me it is many years since he last picked up a pawn in anger.
27 July 2008
The duel between the two former (many-time) club champions Reg and Neville proved to be the tough battle that we expected. The game went into an even B+R endgame with some superb tactical shots coming from both sides of the board before Reg ran out the eventual winner.
Phil's woes continued when he again blew a won game against a junior (Nina). Two pawns up in the endgame, time trouble was a factor when a knight was left en prise however the two extra connected passed pawns were enough to hold a lucky draw.
Russell put up terrific resistance against Alastair surviving into a very even endgame before going down fighting.
At 11 years and 8 months Ashton Fitzallen is the Club's youngest member and my personal pick for a future Tasmanian Champion if he maintains his interest in the game, (though it is highly likely that Vincent and/or Alastair will beat him to it!). This week, in only his second ever tournament game, he made the talented Andrew Fifield work very hard indeed for the full point.
Nigel (the Cadel Evans of the BCC?), who had been crushed earlier by Vincent in the Club Championship, was able to hold the youngster to a draw this time in the shorter time trial of the R.I. which better suits his playing style.
25 July 2008
This year's Robert Isted has kicked off with a huge bang as Charlie Smith pulled off a shock win against newly crowned Club co-champion Phil Donnelly.
Charlie hung in doggedly with a miserable position where he was forced to give up the exchange but his patience was rewarded in the last 5 minutes when Phil, aiming to simplify in to a won ending, simplified in to a lost one instead. Charlie Smith Phil Donnelly 1-0
Numbers for the event are excellent with 19 all up currently (and still not too late to enter), including 4 new junior members, Ashton Fitzallen, Jade Bryant, Gemma Woodwell and Mitchell Reid.
One of the new juniors is a girl so, with the welcome return of Nina Horton, the Club can boast two female entrants for the event.
The tournament is to be a 9 round Swiss aiming to finish on the 10th September.
A late committee decision was made just prior to the start of the event that the time limit would be 60 minutes plus 30 seconds. Hence all games moves must be recorded.
 |
The unofficial motto of the Burnie Chess Club is "Nil Desperandum", (never give up).
Dylan (right) ponders a tricky situation!
Alastair is white and his pawns on c7, b7 and a7 are each 1 move from Queening. |
 |
Oops did I say Queening?
I meant promoting!
Dylan resigns due to that boring old rule about checkmate which has interfered with many a good game. |
 |
The final position with black in checkmate.
Alastair's masterpiece is unfortunately flawed.
The knight on a8 is doing nothing! |

Donnelly and Dyer tie for the title.
Persistance has paid off for Phil Donnelly who has staked a claim on the BCC Championship on his 9th attempt at it since 2000. In this interval of 8 years he has previously finished 2nd twice and 3rd 4 times.
Alastair Dyer has joined him in 1st place to share the title that he won outright last year.
Neville Ledger has finished in 3rd place after drawing his last game with Dragan Radosavljevic.
It is almost certainly some sort of a record statistic in Tasmania for a player to score 9 draws in a Chess Tournament as Neville did.
Final crosstable

26 June 2008
Alastair Dyer defeated Russell Horton in his last game of the event and in doing so he has retained his title as Club Champion although there is every chance that he will have to share the honour this year as Phil Donnelly will join him on 13.5 points should he defeat Jackson Jolly in his last game.
Dragan Radosavljevic was already in trouble early in his game with Donnelly
before a later tactical error, (overloaded Queen theme), sealed his fate.
Results of other games played last Wednesday were as follows: -
David 1 vs Jackson 0
Reg 1 vs Andrew 0
Carey 1 vs Nigel 0. This was an excellent game with attack counter attack and some solid defence by Carey in towards the end against an attack where one wrong move was curtains. Even though the attack petered out Nigel still kept a few tricks up his sleeve with Carey low on time and having to avoid cunning stalemate traps.
Vincent 1 vs Charlie 0
The current crosstable for the event is given under.
(Mile Pavicic withdrew some time ago for health reasons. The games he has forfeited are shown in smaller font with strikethrough)
14 June 2008
As the Club Championships draws to a close two contenders for the title remain standing.
Alastair Dyer needs to win his last game against Russell Horton to make sure of at least a share
of 1st place while Phil Donnelly must defeat both Dragan Radosavljevic and Jackson Jolly in his last two games to do the same.
The key games vs Horton and Radosavljevic resp. are scheduled for this week.
Other games this coming Wednesday are David vs Jackson, Reg vs Andrew and Tim vs Vincent.
Last week, in the only game was played, Phil Donnelly had an easy win over Tim Jolly . Jolly lost a piece for two pawns in the early stages of an open Ruy Lopez and, although he played well to make the task as difficult as possible, white eventually ground out a win.
16th May 2008
| Defending champ Alastair Dyer tightened his grip on this year's club championship when he smashed Dragan Radosavljevic's favourite Nimzowitch defence in 20 moves. As early as move 13 Dragan's King was already off on a suicide mission to the centre of a board bristling with enemy pieces and, following a neat queen sacrifice by Alastair forcing mate in 1, he was obliged to resign. |

 |
Meanwhile Phil Donnelly, hung on to a glimmer of hope of snaring his first club championship when he ended Neville Ledger's long unbeaten run, (6 draws and 4 wins). In an English which became a King's Indian Phil picked on a backward pawn on the half open c file until something gave and Neville's position broke up. |
 |
| Dylan Kuzmic managed to win the exchange off Nigel Lewis but, as is so often the case in such situations, Nigel got excellent compensation for the material and with two beautiful knights dominating the centre he posed too many practical problems for both Dylan and his clock. (I still have painful memories of a similar experience against Russell where I won the exchange before being quickly thrashed) |
 |
| Charlie Smith and Carey Kuzmic worked up an incredibly complex encounter in which Charlie made the first mistake and that was all Carey needed. |
 |
Vincent Horton was just too good for Jackson Jolly |
 |
| while Tim put up a good fight against Reg Harvey before succumbing. |
 |
| You can play any variation of the Sicilian defence you care to against Kevin Hendrey. He gives them all pretty much the same treatment with his Closed Sicilian
set up which aims to build up an unstoppable kingsider. This time Russell, (as black), went for the thematic queenside counterplay with a ...b5 break, but his break broke down when the white attack broke through. |
|
Alastair's convincing wins, (games below), in the past two weeks against Phil and Dragan are an indication that his recent slightly wobbly form has now steadied.
The other entrants of the upcoming Tasmanian Open Championship in Hobart should please take note!
12th May 2008
Last weeks results:
Andrew Fifield defeated Jackson Jolly
Russell Horton defeated Vincent Horton.
Vincent had the better of the opening Kings Indian Petrosian, however he missed the tactics in the centre.
Dragan Radosavljevic defeated David Hughes
Alastair Dyer defeated Phil Donnelly in an interesting variation of the Qf3 and g4 variation of the Najdorf.
Dylan Kuzmic drew with Carey Kuzmic in an interesting minor pieces and pawns vs. rook and pawns.
Reg Harvey looked to have some good pressure on the f file against Nigel Lewis but with stiff resistance Nigel shone through.
Tim Jolly put up a good fight before going into a lost endgame to Neville Ledger.
4th May 2008
Dylan Kuzmic ground down Andrew Fifield.
Reg Harvey had little trouble in defeating novice player Jackson Jolly while Charlie Smith left his king too exposed in the opening allowing Phil Donnelly to win with a quick attack.
Nigel Lewis fell for a simple tactic whereby he lost a piece to Alastair Dyer and the game went the same way soon after.
The Horton's were involved in the two best struggles of the evening.
Russell finally began making mistakes towards the ending of this long tough game and Carey was able to 1st pick off a knight and then push a pawn through to queen, romping home to an easy win from there.
Vincent's game with Neville ended up in a drawish double rook and pawn ending
which was
terminated with an agreed draw after some controversy regarding the requirement to record moves.
Entrants are reminded that under FIDE rules you are obliged to record ALL the moves of a tournament game where there is a Fischer time increment of 30 seconds or more per move.
26th April 2008-
Charlie Smith played solidly and defeated Tim Jolly and his advanced e pawn threats.
Reg Harvey had a good positional advantage and broke through to defeat David Hughes.
The Kings Gambit theme tournament had 11 starters playing 10’+3”. Alastair Dyer dominated with 5/5 followed by Russell Horton on 4/5 and Vincent Horton on 3.5/5.
21st April 2008-
With 7 rounds and numerous catch up games the BCC is having a short change of pace this week.
Reg Harvey plays David Hughes.
The remainder of club players will be playing a theme tournament: 1. e4, e5. 2. f4…
Last week an hour glass tournament was held. Ten players joined in including some new juniors. Each round featured two games against the opponent with 1:30 secs on the hourglass. Junior player Ashton scored 5 points to be the best of the new comers. Nigel Lewis had a return to form with the quicker time controls suiting him. He finished with an impressive 15 points from 16 games! Juniors, Alastair Dyer and Vincent Horton, finished equal second with 14 points, with Russell close behind with 12.
14th April 2008
The highlight of the night was Neville Ledger’s draw against Mile Pavicic. Neville had good control of the e file and forced a swap off of rooks and minor pieces. Neville also weakened Mile's kingside pawns but with queens on the board there wasn’t much in it and a draw was agreed.
Kevin Hendrey ended up with too many pawns for Dylan Kuzmic.
Carey Kuzmic defeated Jackson Jolly.
Andrew Fifield played well against Alastair Dyer and at one stage was slightly better with the white pieces. After a few swaps and centralizing the white king a forced checkmate eventuated which both players missed. Alastair didn’t need a second chance and quickly mated Andrew to the amusement of onlookers.
Charlie Smith and Dragan Radosavljevic match had long chains of pawns blocking the board. Charlie’s bishop was locked in but was able to come to life after a miscalculation by Dragan going for a win. Charlie then had winning chances but ended with a hard fought draw against his much higher rated opponent.
6th April 2008
Games were played ad hoc last week.
Dylan outplayed Dragan and was a rook up. Dragan continued to make threats and weaved his way into the back ranks and in a difficult position forced a checkmate. Post game analysis wasn't able to find away for Dylan to save the game.
Jackson was a piece up against his father, Tim, but wasn't able to hang on and went down.
Russell struggled from the opening against David and while some sharp tatics were encountered late in the game, David held his advantage and forced mate.
Carey and Neville saw an epic encounter with a long hard fought game. With the centre blocked a draw was agreed, maintaining Neville excellent form. In lengthy post game analysis a win was eventually found for Carey.
Vincent continued his form against the senior players and was not troubled in his win against Nigel.
Phil and Mile are expected to be away next week and we will be playing round 11 with the match between Kevin and Reg brought forward.
On the 16 and 23 April we will be playing some friendly tournaments and new players are welcome to attend from 6:45-9:30pm. Players with outstanding club championship games will have an opportunity to play these while a friendly double round blitz will be held on the first week and a theme tournament the following week.
28th March 2008
With the Easter break only five games were played last Wednesday evening.
Neville Ledger continued his excellent unbeaten run in the tournament by holding Alastair Dyer to a draw and bring his tally to 4 wins, 4 draws for 6/8!
However the big upset of the round was Russell's win over Dragan radosavljevic. Dragan played his usual style and while this time he intended (!) to castle Russell restricted his plan. Dragan's desperate tactics were insufficient and he went down.
Nigel scored his first win of the championships over Jackson Jolly and will be hoping to put some pickets on the fence in the remainder of the tournament!
Carey remained too passive and lost to Vincent who played some good tactics.
David exploited Tim's weaknesses and gained a comfortable point.
21st March 2008
Last Wednesday evening...
Tim and Carey played an interesting Q and pawn vs Rook Pawn and bishop. Both pawns were close to queering, play was tense, however in the end the players agreed to a draw with only minutes remaining.
Russell and Charlie played an interesting Dutch Defence, with Russell having open file control and Charlie Defending superbly. An interesting ending developed with Rook and 4 isolated pawns vs rook and pawn. Eventually a hard fought win to white.
Neville had another draw and while slightly better accepted the draw and protected his undefeated record in this tournament
13th March 2008
Phil Donnelly got a relatively easy win against Russell Horton after the latter dropped his b pawn early in the game. (curiously the same thing happened the week previous in Phil's game with David Hughes.)
Nigel Lewis dropped a piece to Neville Ledger
and lost inevitably.
Dragan Radosavljevic pressed hard for a win against Mile Pavicic to no avail. In an ending where Dragan had a passed QR pawn Mile was able to set up the necessary blocakde and a draw was agreed.
Vincent Horton managed to nicely defuse Reg Harvey's Stonewall but ended up losing a rook ending that he probably should have won but Reg's greater experience paid off.
For other results see round 15 of the draw via the link under.
7th March 2008
Hughes Donnelly 0-1: David, in an inferior position, dropped a pawn and with a second one soon to go he
resigned.
Horton Pavicic 0-1: Mile's experience proved to much for young Vincent.
Ledger Smith 1-0: Charlie was holding his own against Neville for much of the game before a late blunder caused collapse.
Harvey Kuzmic 1-0: In one of the most exciting games iof the event so far Reg set up a stonewall and sacrificed a minor piece for the breakthrough. With kings on opposite wings Dylan defended well and his counterattack was ultimately unstoppable and conclusive.
Fifield Horton 0-1 On the white side of a Half Slav Andrew made the positional mistake of advancing c4 - c5 and his centre was immediately under pressure from an early e5 by Russell. In spite of his spending an incredible 45 minutes on his first 6 moves he could find no way to avoid defeat in a game that was a spectacular example of how NOT to play the opening! (see game)
3rd March 2008
In this week's upset victory, (there always seems to be at least one!) Charlie Smith outplayed Nigel Lewis whose rating continues to nose-dive due to indifferent form.
Most other games went as expected but there was a long hard fought draw between Neville Ledger and Russell Horton while Dragan Radosavljevic routed a still rusty Reg Harvey.
Mile Pavicic leads with
5/5 followed by Alastair Dyer and Dragan Rad 4/5 and Phil Donnelly on 3.5/4.
Next week promises a swag of games that could go either way.
22nd February 2008
The big news this week is Tim Jolly's amazing win over current Club Champion Alastair Dyer. Not many people would have been brave enough to pick Tim, outranked by 500+ ratings points, to win this one in a mere 20 moves but that is what happened. (Game below)
Carey (Q + piece ) had an inetresting game against Kevin (2 rooks + piece) until Kevin separated his rooks and a series of checks led to loss of rook.
Dylan and Vincent played a seesawing game. Dylan sacrificed a piece with a nice combo for two pawns but lacked any attack. Vincent regained a pawn and then fumbled about keeping the position blocked despite being a piece up.
Mile easily acocunted for Russell who didn't have much idea about the Budapest.
Phil Donnelly went into a better endgame against Nigel Lewis but didn't have to grind it out as Nigel went into self destruct mode with a run of bad errors.
Reg Harvey got on the board with a win over Charlie Smith.
Neville Ledger got a pawn up against Andrew Fifield but was unable to convert the advantage into a win.
(Notes: Russell, Phil)
15th February 2008
There were 3 high achievers this week. Vincent Horton somehow managed to down Dragan Radosavljevic from what looked like a very even Rook and pawn ending. Andrew Fifield defeated Nigel Lewis in yet another encounter that looked evenly balanced in the middle game. Russell Horton caught (a possibly rusty?) Reg Harvey off guard, penetrating the king position with his queen to force mate.
On other boards Tim Jolly held Dylan Kuzmic to a draw and other games went with the higher rated player.
David's Hughes unorthdox defence (the death wish var. I think) to Alastair Dyer's Evan's gambit was the quickest game of the evening with black resigning well before move 20.
11th February 2008
The club championship is now well under way and I now have the results and draw at my disposal after two rounds of play.
Round 1: Andrew Fifield upset Vincent Horton and Phil Donnelly was held to a draw by Dylan Kuzmic.
Round 2:
report from Russell
Neville 1 Reg 0 Just like 20 years ago – Reg played the Dutch
Dylan 0 Mile 1 Lost a piece early – game over
Alastair 1 Carey 0 moved the Queen instead of the pawn. Needed to shift the queen around quite a bit and in trouble from early on and never recovered form underdevelopment.
Andrew 0 David 1. David was winning and Andrew fought back to a drawn endgame before making some errors and losing.
Russell 0 Jackson 1 Touch move – my queen is dead. Fought back but could not overcome solid play.
Nigel ½ Kevin ½ Nigel was winning but swapped off one too many pawns.
Dragan 1 Tim 0 A very interesting endgame. Advantage to Dragan but looked drawish. Tim made an error late in the game under time pressure. Although Dragan’s endgame technique was very good. |
