Latest SBS 2008 information moved to a new page !

August 2008 Update

June 2008 update

The public beta of Small Business Server 2008 & Essential Business Server 2008 has been released!

Previous information

I have personally spent some time in March 07 in Redmond with the SBS Product team and other MVP's. I and other MVPs have heard from Microsoft on what they have planned for the next version of SBS (Cougar). We have commented on their design, seen samples and helped them through beta testing.

The Cougar release is due some time after Windows Server 2008 when it is launched in February 2008.

I am covered by a tight NDA on some things however a lot has gone public and can be simply Googled.

To start you off ....

Cougar will be built on Longhorn Server and will include things like Exchange 2007. Cougar has been designed to be 64 bit only. Exchange 2007 is 64 bit only. Upgrades for Cougar will not be available. Migrating from your current flavor of SBS 200x to Microsoft SBS Cougar will not be an in place upgrade.

Expect the Swing migration team (Jeff Middleton) to be working on a solution for us !

Moving to 64 bit is a big jump. you need to make sure your tools and applications will work in a 64 bit environment.  It also means that you will need to ensure that the drivers you get are compatible with 64 bit.

Some of the really cool longhorn tools (Server 2008) is Monad or now called  PowerShell. I love the command prompt and the power of WSH scripting (Vbs files). Now we have a cool scripting environment that forms the basis for Windows 2008 and Exchange 2007 management.

Note that you can run SBS 2003 R2 in 32-bit mode on existing x64 hardware, so if you are looking to buy SBS 2003 R2, you can buy today’s hardware that will run tomorrow’s software.

The Cougar release will be more tightly integrated with the desktop (specifically the Office 12 system, including SharePoint, and Vista clients). The Cougar bundle will include strong line-of-business support, as well as improved management and troubleshooting functionality.

Microsoft are still taking applications for future releases of the beta of Cougar here. http://connect.microsoft.com/cougar.

There are some things I will miss. They have changed in Cougar from SBS 2003. These things have been announced/discussed by many others.

Don't forget, these comments are made on Beta product, Microsoft does reserve the right to change features as they need to.

Here are some thoughts to get your mind ticking over
