From Frankston to Sorrento I saw many large houses and mansions, but Sorrento and Portsea went right off the scale, with
enormous cliff-top houses with views over the bay and private stairways to boatsheds and beaches at water level.
At Sorrento, I caught the car ferry to Queenscliff. The journey took about 30 minutes and with the mansions and shipping to
gawk at was quite interesting. This was the longest leg of my trip and I was concerned that it might have been too tiring
but in the end, I managed it pretty well.
Queenscliff where I stayed the first night is a very pretty town just inside the bay. It has wide streets and a number of
grand old hotels, some renovated and most containing flash restaurants. Funny thing was... the town was as dead as a post after 6pm.
Someone, I can't remember who, told me that it is because there isn't a decent beach nearby.
I ate at the local bowling club and stayed at one of the less fancy hotels that had been converted into a youth hostel. It was
quiet, but quite ok.
