Beau Rides the Great Ocean Road

Clean and fresh and about to set off

Day 1 - Melbourne to Queenscliff (94.5km)

I wanted to travel light, so my equipment for this journey comprised my $65 Indy 500 bike, two paniers, a handlebar bag, camera, spare cycling kit, some tools and a change of clothes. I was a bit worried that I mightn't have enough dry gear as the weather the previous week had been atrocious, but I decided to risk it.

I started my trip on Monday the 12th of January from Surrey Hills, which is the highest point in metropolitan Melbourne, I travelled south along Warragal Rd to the Nepean Highway near Mordialoc. It was after peak hour, so not too busy, but the many grates along the gutter were annoying.

From there I followed the bay south to Sorrento. Whilst the Nepean Highway is busy, there are many opportunities to ride along parallel roads, often along the beach side of the highway, and the highway itself has cycle lanes marked for much of the way.

Much to my surprise, the beaches along the bay looked clean and inviting although the seemingly continuous caravan parks that stretched for miles between the road and the beaches were a bit of a turn-off.
