The natural structure of the polyhex Tree of Life reflects the Sefer Yetzirah blueprint. The diagram is colour-coded to indicate the presence, influence, and movement of the three mother letter principles: Alef, Maym, and Shin.

Simply put…

Alef (א) = The Will of the Creator–His Spirit aspect.
Maym (מ) = The Creative Desire of the Creator–His Consciousness aspect.
Shin (ש) = The Intelligence of the Creator–His Form aspect.

Generally speaking, the Alef principle (‘Breath from Breath’) is colour-coded yellow; the Maym principle (‘Water from Breath’) is colour-coded blue; the Shin principle (‘Fire from Water’) is colour-coded red.

The Alef (א) principle in Ain Sof provides a foundation for the entire Tree of Life.

The Alef (א) principle in Keter provides a foundation for the three mother letter sefirot (i.e. the logoic triad) and three mother letter pathways.

The Maym (מ) principle in Hockmah provides a foundation for the seven double letter pathways and seven double letter sefirot (i.e. the six vertices and centre-point of the Holy Temple Octahedron).

The Shin (ש) principle in Binah provides a foundation for the twelve simple letter pathways (i.e. the twelve edges of the Holy Temple Octahedron). A downward projection of the twelve simple letter pathways (i.e. their projected coalescence) produces the supplemental sefirah Malkut.

The sefirah Malkut embodies the kabbalistic World of Assiah (‘Making’) and is therefore excluded from the Tree of Yetzirah (‘Formation’).

The three mother letter sefirot and the seven double letter pathways (light blue hex)—located at the top of the Tree diagram—constitute the macrocosmic (i.e. logoic) portion of the Tree of Life.

The three mother letter sefirot—Keter, Hockmah, and Binah—anchor the Consciousness of the Creator within the Tree of Life.

The seven double letter pathways represent the seven arch-angels who attend the Throne of the Creator. They also represent the seven ‘Rays’ and the seven Planetary Intelligences who inform and guide the seven lower sefirot (symbolizing the seven planets). They embody (i.e. give expression to) the living eternally-flowing ‘stream of consciousness’ of the Creator.

The seven double letter sefirot (light blue circles on red hex) and the twelve simple letter pathways (light red hex) constitute the lower, microcosmic (i.e. human) portion of the Tree of Life—that is, the Holy Temple Octahedron.

The Alef, Maym, and Shin pathways form the vertical Middle Pillar of the Tree of Life. Their influences flow invisibly beneath the surface of the Tree. They are ultimately responsible for the unfolding process of divine Creation. Their representative hexes are pictured to the right of the main Tree diagram.

The Alef pathway especially infuses the macrocosmic (i.e. logoic) portion of the Tree of Life. The Maym and Shin pathways especially infuse the microcosmic (i.e. human) portion of the Tree of Life.

The esoteric formula ‘AM’ (אם) rules the macrocosm. The AM formula symbolizes the evolutionary goal of the seven planetary logoi. Their goal is to develop and formulate a creative vision (Maym) that reflects the will and purpose (Alef) of the Creator (solar logos). The details of the formulated vision flow down to microcosmic consciousness as creative inspiration (Maym).

The Alef principle (yellow) combines with the Maym principle (blue) within the seven double letter pathways (and sefirot). Their admixture in each pathway hex is symbolized by a green line passing through it.

The esoteric formula ‘ShM’ (שם) rules the microcosm. The ShM formula symbolizes the evolutionary goal of Humanity. [See my books Formation of the Tree of Life and Sefer Yetzirah Magic]

The Maym principle (blue) combines with the Shin principle (red) within the twelve simple letter pathways (and within the absent sefirah Malkut). Their admixture in each pathway hex is symbolized by a purple line passing through it.

Within the microcosm the Shin principle especially dominates the three sefirot of the Nefesh (i.e. the human personality, or ‘animal soul’). The Nefesh sefirot are Yesod, Hod, and Netzah.

Within the microcosm the Maym principle especially dominates the three sefirot of the Yechidah (i.e. the human soul/monad). The Yechidah sefirot are Geburah, Hesed, and Da’at. More specifically, the sefirah Da’at represents the Yechidah, or human monad. The Sefer Yetzirah refers to the human monad (i.e. Da’at) as the ‘Covenant of Union’.

The Sefer Yetzirah doesn’t count the sphere of Tifaret as a sefirah. Tifaret is a concealed central component of the microcosm. The Sefer Yetzirah refers to Tifaret as ‘the Holy Temple’. Tifaret is hidden (along with the Shin and Maym pathways) within the Holy Temple Octahedron, on its central vertical axis.

The object of human evolution (in the context of the Tree of Life) is to combine the Shin and Maym principles within human consciousness under the guidance of the Alef principle. This process is coordinated from the Holy Temple (i.e. Tifaret). The officiating priest (or divine intermediary) who inhabits the Holy Temple is called the ‘Angel of Breath’. He pronounces the Holy Name (ShM) within the Holy Temple. In other words, the gradual merging of Shin and Maym is controlled by the Angel of Breath within the sphere of Tifaret.

Following the ShM Initiation Jacob (an aspirant) becomes Israel (a ShM Initiate, a Meshiach—‘anointed one’) and gains full control of the merging of Shin and Maym within the Holy Temple Octahedron. The Angel of Breath then returns to the ranks of the Angel Hierarchy for its next assignment.
